Municipal Telecommunications Utility Update: Now what?

Jul 18, 2018 | Keeping PACE with Pella

Remember that referendum regarding the Municipal Telecommunications Utility that we urged everyone to vote in? In case you didn’t hear, that referendum passed with an overwhelming 92% vote in support of the utility.

So… now what?

This referendum approved the City to move forward with the feasibility study and drafting of a business plan for the utility. The City has hired FARR Technologies out of Sioux Falls, South Dakota to consult and guide the City on this project.

On Tuesday July 9, FARR Technologies met with members of area businesses to discuss first steps moving forward and the beginnings of forming a business plan for Pella. This team will meet again on August 9th and 28th as the planning process continues.

This business plan will include short-term and long-term plans for this utility as it pertains to providing telecommunication services to residents, small businesses, and large businesses.

The tentative date for the completion of the business plan is September 21, 2018.

Why is a municipal telecommunications utility relevant? Not only would it provide positive competition in the area, but also having a municipal telecommunications utility would mean fast speeds, reliable connection, and the perks of having a local team ready to help you when something isn’t working correctly.

Right now, the City and FARR Technologies are asking residents and employees of the Pella area to participate in an online survey. This survey will help immensely in the process of drafting up a successful business plan for Pella.
