When you have planted roots, it’s hard to dig them up and transplant them somewhere else. Dutch Greeters were delighted to welcome this Pella native and her new business back home, where she’s hung out her shingle and put those roots down ever firmer.
Beatriz Mate-Kodjo (the BMK in BMK Law Firm) grew up in Pella, attended Central College and nearby Drake University Law School, and practiced her profession in Polk County for eight years before starting her own law firm in 2021. But being a lawyer wasn’t Beatriz’s first choice for a career. She attended Central College for International Studies with an emphasis in African Studies and Spanish. With a suggestion from her dad to consider law school and the desire to find a career path, she went for it and ended up being very good at it!
You could say BMK Law Firm is a family affair with her sister Paloma as the Director of Marketing and Community Relations and her daughter Aurelia as the Social Media Manager. Beatriz is thankful for the help as the phones have been busy and word of mouth spreads when your practice is more specialized and your office is bi-lingual.
She practices in state and federal courts in Workplace and Student Rights with a passion for race discrimination. Most of her clients are in Iowa, but Zoom allows clients everywhere to work with Beatriz.
Beyond her duties as a lawyer, Beatriz teaches employment law at Drake University Law School, is part of many associations and boards, and enjoys spending time with her daughter and family.
If you would like to learn more about BMK Law Firm, you can find them on Instagram, their website, or in town on Washington Street.
