Timeless Tradition of Horology

Pella, where the rhythm of life beats to the chiming of antique clocks (can you say Klokkenspel?!) and the steady tick-tock of mechanical timepieces, a new business has emerged to honor the timeless tradition of horology. Tulip Time Watch and Clock recently made its debut with a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by the PACE Alliance Dutch Greeters, marking a significant addition to Pella’s cultural and commercial landscape.

The story behind Tulip Time Watch and Clock is not merely one of entrepreneurship but a testament to familial ties, craftsmanship, and a deep-rooted passion for preserving the intricate mechanics of time. Colin Prouty, along with his wife Sarah and their two young boys, made the pivotal decision to relocate to Pella, drawn by both familial connections and the town’s rich cultural tapestry.
“We are very excited to be here! We moved to Pella recently; my sister lives here,” shared Sarah, reflecting the family’s eagerness to embrace their new community.

For Colin, a seasoned craftsman with a penchant for mechanical intricacies, the decision to establish a watch and clock business in Pella was a natural progression.
“We were looking into towns that had a need for a business like this. We knew the culture of Pella and what the community values, and hey, lots of people have clocks here, especially antique clocks. Their clocks are special to the community, so we thought it was a perfect place to open up our business,” explained Colin, outlining the thoughtful deliberation that led to choosing Pella as their business’s home.

Colin’s journey into the world of horology began with a steadfast love for working on clocks, nurtured over years of hands-on experience and formal apprenticeship. From his early days working at Ford to honing his craft with an Engineering Firm, Colin’s trajectory eventually led him to an apprenticeship at a watch shop in Des Moines.

Craftsmanship at its Best

“There was an opening for an apprenticeship with a renowned Clock and Watch shop in Des Moines. I applied for it and got it, and worked there for a couple of years. I learned hands-on and did some online schooling,” recounted Colin, reflecting on the pivotal role of apprenticeship in refining his skills as a Clock and Watch Maker.

With an array of services ranging from retail to meticulous repair work, Tulip Time Watch and Clock has swiftly carved a niche for itself within the Pella community. Colin’s expertise extends beyond mere maintenance, with specialized services for iconic timepieces like Grandfather Clocks, each requiring delicate care and attention.
“When it comes to Grandfather Clocks, I go to the location they are, remove the insides, bring them back to the shop to work on, then reassemble them. They don’t transport well, so I go to the clocks,” shared Colin, underscoring the personalized approach that defines his craftsmanship.

Moreover, Tulip Time Watch and Clock boasts an impressive selection of analog watches, catering to aficionados enamored by the mechanical intricacies of traditional timepieces. From sourcing custom items for smartwatches to offering an extensive range of batteries and specialized tools, Colin ensures that every customer’s needs are met with precision and care.
Colin’s vision for the business transcends mere commerce, encompassing a shared commitment to preserving and celebrating the town’s horological heritage. With an array of whimsical clocks and enchanting timepieces adorning the store shelves, Tulip Time Watch and Clock serves as a testament to the enduring allure of craftsmanship and the timeless art of timekeeping.

With each tick of the clock and every turn of the watch’s hands, Tulip Time Watch and Clock serves as a beacon of tradition, bridging the past with the present and ensuring that the legacy of horology endures for generations to come.
